A few months ago I read somewhere that a software package for OO Hebrew is going to be released to better support document interchange between MS-Office and OO. It was said the software package will be released around January 2007. does anyone have any idea where I can find this software and when will it be released?

Hi Ami,
The project mentioned in the link is the docx-odt translator. This has
little to do with MS Office OOo compatability.

The OOo native format is not ODT. To use ODT with OOo you actually use
filters like the .DOC filters. So using the docx-odt project with OOo
means that you do double translation, doc->odt->sxw, instead of the
current single translation doc->sxw when opening MS Office documents. Hard
for me to beleive that this will offer any improvement. If anything, it
will make the situation worse, at least initially.

Hi yba

As far as I understand Open Document is the default file format for OO (maybe not the native). Since I moved to OO2 I (and almost anybody else I know use the ODF) I save files only in ODF formats. SXW format is used only for backward compatability. ODF is one of the major advantages of OO.

Hi Ami,
We are looking into the code of 2.1 and speaking with the developers in
Hamburg in order to understand to what degree OOo 2.X actually uses ODT as
the "native" format. The fact that the default file format for saving
documents changed to ODT in 2.X does not mean much in itself. It could be
just a change in the .xml setup files and not a change in the code. It
could also the case that even if the change is in the code that saves
to files and loads from file you still get better results using .sxw
instead of .odt because the conversion from the in-RAM document
representation to the on-disk ODT representation is not yet correct
(especially with regard to RTL behavior), or because there are some
elements of the in-RAM representation that do not map to anything in ODT.
I hope to have an answer for you in the next week.

ODF is both the native and default file format. Saving to SXW will first
create an ODF stream which will be passed to a transformer writing SXW.
However, SXW and ODT should be totally equivalent, so this
transformation is "lossless".

of course there's one restriction to this: Features which have been
added to OOo 2.0 will most likely be lost when saving to sxw.
